EllisDon selected to build Halifax TD Centre: Halifax’s biggest Class A, LEED® Gold, Smart Building0

We are very pleased to inform you that TD Centre owner, TDB Halifax Holdings Limited, has chosen EllisDon Corporation as the construction manager for the expansion and total renovation of the TD Centre on the corner of Barrington and George streets in Halifax. This appointment allows the project to proceed to the construction phase this summer.

The project will double the TD Centre’s current floor space to 200,000 sq. feet. Designed by Halifax-based Lydon Lynch Architects, the project aims to attain a LEED*(R)  Gold (CS**) certification making it the biggest and newest Class A Smart Building in Halifax when it opens in 2014.

You may recall that the expansion project received unanimous approval from the HRM Heritage Advisory and Design Review committees in 2011.

The building’s new systems will reduce operating costs by 40 to 50%, making total rent very competitive for tenant bottom lines, generate lower emissions, and give tenants more and better control over their air quality and other environmental systems.

A larger, smarter, refreshed and energy-efficient TD Centre will support Nova Scotia’s economic success, help revitalize the downtown core and will provide you with some of the best workspace in the region.

Accommodating tenants, neighbours, traffic during construction

Everyone likes the idea of transforming a tired office tower into a beautiful new, energy-efficient Smart Building, but no one looks forward to living through the process. That’s why EllisDon was chosen as construction partner – they have the approach, deep experience and resources needed to safely accommodate you in keeping your operation functioning normally during construction. Getting that right for tenants and neighbours is critically important to us.

EllisDon has a strong track record of carefully managing significant redevelopments to allow those working in and around the site to run their businesses and affairs with little or no upset. For example they achieved this balance during the Halifax Shopping Centre and NSCC Akerley campus renovations, and during the re-cladding of First Canadian Place in Toronto, Canada’s tallest skyscraper.

Dunn & Associates Communications and Public Affairs has also been retained to help manage our communications with you and our other stakeholders throughout this process. Again, good communication is part of getting this right for you and everyone involved.

EllisDon’s appointment completes the TD Centre project team of TDB Halifax Holdings (the Thiel family), Lydon Lynch Architects, Compass Commercial Realty, and Dunn & Associates.

Getting started

This summer we met with tenants to review and discuss the proposed construction plan and schedule. Once these are finalized, we will share key aspects with tenants, neighbours and the public.

In the meantime, EllisDon has begun working with Halifax Regional Municipality to coordinate preparations at street level to ensure the area is secure for construction when it begins in the coming weeks.
